Shelley Jean is a humanitarian at heart who has been working in Haiti for over 15 years on behalf of Haitian families. Her heart was stirred when she found mothers who were forced to place their children in orphanages because they were not able to provide for them. Her mission has been to create empowering and sustainable jobs to help families stay together.
Originally from The Congo in Central Africa, Loick Muyuka draws from his rich heritage to empower artisans in Haiti. He has lived in Haiti for several years and also does extensive work to promote opportunities for those from diverse backgrounds in the states as well.
Marcel is an essential team member, who ensures that resources are allocated appropriately and regularly puts his life at risk to ensure that artisans are taken care of. He has survived a kidnapping himself and his tenacity in the face of adversity is beyond admirable.
Rich spent much of his time as a youth in the United States and is an invaluable member of the team as a cultural liaison who works tirelessly from a logistical standpoint to ensure that artisans have access to the care and resources they need.
Shelley in Haiti – One Woman’s Quest for Orphan Prevention through job creation has been inspiring people around the world since its release.
What makes a country like Haiti so poor? Why are there so many orphanages? What can those of us from a place of privilege do to help in a country where the poverty seems relentless, systemic, and complicated? Are there better options than building more orphanages to help children in poverty? All of these questions and more addressed in my new book, “The Orphan Gospels” where I wrestle with the complicated solutions to child abandonment and orphan care in an attempt to bring hope to the plight of the orphan both in Haiti and worldwide.
